Medical Schemes vs Primary Health Insurance

The essential differences you need to know

Choosing between a medical scheme and primary health insurance can be confusing, especially when both products are described as forms of “medical cover”. Although sharing the same description, they operate under completely different laws and offer very different levels of protection. Understanding these differences will help you choose the right financial protection for your health needs.

The real difference behind the terminology

Medical schemes Primary health insurance

What happens behind the scenes and what is each product designed to solve

Medical schemes

PMBs ensure that serious conditions and emergencies are covered in full, regardless of your plan option.

Best for members who want:

  • Protection against catastrophic medical expenses
  • Hospitalisation, surgery, cancer treatment and specialist cover
  • Legally protected benefits and guaranteed access

Primary health insurance

Benefits are capped exactly as per the policy wording. No guaranteed emergency cover and no comprehensive hospital funder behind you.

Best for members who want:

  • Affordable access to private primary healthcare
  • Cover for everyday GP visits, basic tests and routine needs
  • Lower premiums, with the understanding that hospitalisation is not included

Choose wisely

These products are not interchangeable.

A medical scheme gives you a financial safety net when life throws a major medical curveball your way. Primary health insurance provides cost‑effective everyday care, but not a safety net.

Benefits are subject to the registered scheme rules or policy wording.
